WOMEN IN FOCUS: JESS B

In celebration of International Women's Day, we sat down with hip-hop artist and muse Jess B, to talk about her journey as a woman breaking into a male-dominated genre.
From mental health advocacy to her upcoming tour with Kehlani, Jess B shares her thoughts on what it means to uplift and support each other in the pursuit of equality

As a leading figure in New Zealand's hip-hop scene, what challenges did you face as a woman breaking into a genre that is often dominated by men, and how did you overcome them?

I think that I have been lucky in my experiences throughout my career thus far. I have faced challenges, of course – and I actually think that many of these challenges are “invisible,” more related to exposure, opportunities, co-signs, etc., as men still hold more powerful positions compared to women in the industry. I do think that aligning myself with inspiring women, femme, and non-binary creatives, friends, and collaborators has been the key to feeling seen and heard! It’s been amazing to facilitate spaces that are not male-dominated. The diverse crowds at my shows speak for themselves, and it’s always the most beautiful energy in the room.

Your music often touches on themes of self-empowerment and resilience. How do you channel your personal experiences into your work, and what message do you hope to convey to other women through your songs?

Something I’ve always tried to show in my music is the multi-faceted nature of my story and the human experience. I’m not afraid to share my experiences that have been challenging or meaningful, just as I love to share the less “deep” sides in music that are about joy, fun, and talking your sh*t! We can be it all; we can express it all. We are all here, living our lives and figuring it out together.

You’re a strong advocate for women’s rights and mental health awareness. What role do you think artists like yourself can play in shifting the conversation around these important issues?

I think it’s all about opening up space for people to feel less alone and platforming meaningful and helpful conversations. There are so many shared feelings and experiences between us all, and I’ve always felt like music is a beautiful way to bring like-minded people together and make the world feel less lonely.

Who are some of the women who have inspired you throughout your journey, and how did they influence your career?

I am so inspired by the amazing women around me. Having the confidence to be myself has come directly from my beautiful friends and the experience of growing together. From deep philosophical chats to talking absolute nonsense, my friends have loved me through every stage and every old version of me that doesn’t exist in the same way anymore. That type of love is unmatched, and I wouldn’t be who I am or have taken the path(s) I have chosen without them. Also, a special mention to my mum, who I think is one of the smartest, most incredible, and resilient people I know.
Looking ahead, what changes would you like to see in the music industry in terms of gender equality, and how do you think women can continue to support each other in breaking barriers?

I want to see more representation, not just for women, but also for queer and gender non-conforming people in the mainstream music industry. I think it’s all about lifting each other up — showing up, sharing music and art, and collaborating with one another. There is power in numbers, and people are wanting more! We just need to help each other get out there.

Tell us about your upcoming tour with Kehlani, how did this come about and what does it mean to you to be touring with another strong, empowering woman in music?

I’ve known Kehlani for quite a few years now. She literally just messaged me on Instagram and asked if I wanted to open, which I was obviously honoured to say yes to. She has always been so supportive and warm, not just to me, but to so many other women and queer artists over the years. It really feels like one of the biggest opportunities of my career — to be in front of a crowd that understands and aligns with who I am. I am so, so grateful, and I’ve gotta kill it!
